As a producer, you need to consider the warmer months when ordering for custom mailing and shipping labels. Adverse heat can cause mailing and shipping labels to lift, curl and fade if not properly manufactured which then creates a poor product image. As you gear up for seasonal product labeling, we provide you with a few tips and tricks to help you pick out the right labeling material for your shipping and mailing labels to ensure that they stand up to the summer heat to last your product’s entire life cycle.

Label Adhesive

It is paramount that you choose the right adhesive for your shipping and mailing labels to ensure that they do not fail. Soft pressure adhesives tend to be easily affected by high temperatures and with time, they liquefy causing the binding to fail or smear.

When this happens, these adhesives leave a residue on your product’s packaging which lowers the aesthetic appeal of your product. Low quality adhesives can also affect the print quality of your product and sometime even damage the printing equipment. Make sure that you instruct your label printing company to use adhesive that is approved for high humidity and heat for your products.

Label Liners And Substrates

Label lifting and curling mostly happens when the liners absorb too much moisture which makes it hard to apply labels. Sudden changes to temperatures mostly attribute to label failure and this can easily happen when you use the wrong type of substrates with liners. The most common combination that is susceptible to this problem is when you combine film substrates with paper liners. If you are not sure what to use on your product, try testing polypropylene liners when using paper labels. It is proven that the more the resistant a liner is to humidity and moisture the less likely your shipping and mailing labels will lift and curl.

Label Storage And Transportation

If you are producer that has to ship products over long distances, you need to invest in climate controlled shipping methods to ensure that your labels stay intact while in route. Shipping over long distances means that your products will be subjected to sudden changes in climatic conditions which can affect the quality of your product labels.

You also need to ensure that your warehouse has a controlled environment to make sure your product’s label quality is not affected while in storage. If you have a tendency to pre order for your labels in bulk, make sure that these labels are stored in a controlled environment to ensure they maintain their original print quality.

If you are a small business owner who does not have the resources to invest in a climate controlled storage and transportation, you can try a few of the following tricks preserve your labels.

  • Store your products in a shrink wrap or plastic bags to protect your labels from temperature fluctuations.
  • Avoid double stacking your labels while storing them.
  • Place your unused labels on lower racks closest to the floor.

To be safe, store your labels below 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
